Q: What motivated and inspired you to start your own business?
Originally it was to give my family a good start. With zero hours and contract work, my son’s had no stable income and couldn’t really plan for the future
Q: Tell us about your business:
Our business is part of the Minuteman Press franchise. We provide marketing, design and printing for all types of businesses. We also provide this high quality service for general public. We have a good support network and if we are unable to do a job in-house, we can send it to our central facility. This ensures that we never have to turn down a job. Help and advice is available to us around the clock.
Q: How did you go about setting up your business?
Minuteman provided us with all our training and have been with us all the way. Helping us with location, property and advice on who to contact and what we needed to do.
Q: What has been your biggest challenge so far with running your own business?
Getting premises. We were set to move into premises in November 2014. Due to a very unreasonable landlord we finally ended negotiations and put an offer in for an alternative property. We are very happy to say we are finally in our new premises, working hard to get everything ready for our grand opening on Monday 29th June 2015
Q: How did/have you overcome these challenges?
We had to decide when to call it a day and go for an alternative option.
Q: What do you love about running your own business?
We are our own boss. The decisions we make are what moulds our business. We get to meet new people every day and we are in charge of our own destiny.
Q: Are there any top tips that you would like to share with others thinking about starting or growing their own business?
Take into consideration every detail. There are always costs that you haven’t considered and obstacles you need to get over. Don’t give up, believe in yourself and others will believe in you. If you’re not sure of something, get advice from someone who knows
Q: How much did you apply for and over what term?
My son and I each applied for a £5,000 franchise loan over a 60 month term.
Q: Why did you access financial support through CWRT?
A good friend recommended them.
Q: What support did you receive from CWRT?
CWRT were very helpful from the start. They helped us improve our business plan and provided us with key information on what we needed to look out for. They made the process simple and if we had any questions, they were just a phone call away.
Q: How has the loan provided helped you?
It has provided the money to get the store decorated and furnished and also to pay for tradesmen. Signage for the front of the shop and materials to get us off to a good start.
Q: Has the start-up loan helped you to create any jobs?
We have created four positions in the store.
Q: Anything else that you would like to add to your case study?
We are very happy to be able to have the opportunity to own our own business.
